Dolphin Fin

Between Christmas and New Year's Chris had off from work, so we planned to tackle some final house projects that we wanted to accomplish for the year. One of them was painting Chrisopher's room (the boy's room). I had planned on painting it "Sterling" by Behr, but when I got to Home Depot I had second thoughts. It looked more blueish than I had imagined and I wanted a true gray. I know it's normally bad to second guess on something like paint (especially a color I had been sure about), but this was one time when it paid off. I went with "Dolphin Fin" instead and love the result. It was just what I was looking for: neutral and matched a stripe in the bedding.
The best part was that my parents offered to watch the kids so we could paint. We completed the entire job in a day (even vacuuming and putting the room back together). It was also a good bonding experience with Chris. It's funny how many random things you end up talking about and how much you laugh when you're doing such a boring job. One thing we were talking about was how nice it was to not have the kids for the day (a very, very rare thing for us), but at the same time we couldn't stop thinking about them and missing them. It's true that you're forever changed once you have kids.
Finally, I got these two decorative shelves from Target for the room (didn't cost a thing bc I had gift cards from Christmas). I got the metal letters (1st letter of their names) from Kohl's which also didn't cost anything because I took back some gifts. I plan on putting little trinkets for each of the kids on them and some pictures.
What do you think of the room/paint color?

  2. Random thought here...have you thought about putting the taller dresser caddy-corner in the room (in the corner to it's left)? It might make the space in that part of the room more usable, where as the couple of feet between the two dressers looks like it can't be used for much except maybe a place to store toys.

  3. i have thought about doing that...the only thing is the lamp is plugged into an outlet on that wall (it's the only light in the room and only outlet that works with the wall switch). it's a possibility in the future though. i don't keep toys upstairs, but that's a whole blog post in itself :0 thanks for the suggestion, i'm still going to look into it!

  5. i'm a neat freak :0 the bed is actually a full size bed and a bunk bed! the top bunk is currently in our guest bedroom. we got the bed and other matching furniture online. it's called Deer Run Furniture. there are lots of different pieces they sell for the set.

  6. Absolutely LOVE the shelving with the 1st name letters! Great job!

On a side note...Chris and I re-painted my youngest sister's room for her birthday once (huge project that involved tearing down panneling and spackling holes etc.) It took us about 3 days but it was a really bonding experience. Don't remember exactly what all we talked about but looking back it's a memory I'm glad we have!

Just curious, do you use flat paint or paint with gloss in it? Chris really likes flat because it touches up so easily where I've always been more partial to gloss.

  7. we use eggshell. it's the closest to flat as you can get, but can still be scrubbed. i would prefer flat for the look, but i couldn't risk it with the kids and guests. i need the option to scrub the walls if necessary.
