Making Pretzels

This weekend we got snowed in (again), so I decided to pull out an Auntie Anne's Pretzel Kit someone gave us for the holidays and give it a try.
It was the 1st time I made pretzels from scratch and I was pretty worried about it because I'm terrible at making dough. First step was making the yeast (which smells really bad) by diluting it in warm water.
Next adding the dough mix and a few other ingredients.
Then the part I always have problems with, kneading the dough. I took my time and luckily it came out! The recipe referred to this as a "dough ball" and Christopher kept saying "A dough ball? A dough ball." The way he would say it would make us crack up :0
Then I had to let it rise for about an hour. Next was making the pretzel shape which I thought was supposed to be fun. It was difficult because I had to work fast and I couldn't get the shape "perfect." Then once it's shaped you have to quickly dip them in a baking soda mixture without having it fall apart or get too wet.
Into the oven to bake.
They tasted really good especially the cinnamon sugar ones, just like Auntie Anne's. It was a fun experience, but a lot of work for just 10 pretzels. It was time consuming too, so I think I wouldn't do it again unless I was making them in bulk. Have you ever made pretzels? :)

  4. This was such a cute gift to get. It does often seem to me that baking is often about the fun of the process and not just the result. I really think I will enjoy baking sweets and breads much more when I have older kids who can really help me and be with me. ~LR
