DIY Wall Art

I've been planning the wall art for our dining room for quite sometime. I knew I wanted to hang bird pictures to coordinate with our china and I love looking at unique birds. After months of searching I came across this site that sells prints of birds. I got four 5x7 prints for $8 and found black matted frames at Target for $16. I originally wanted 8x10 prints, but matted frames at that size wouldn't fit on the wall. Here's the bird prints I selected:
American Goldfinch (NJ's state bird!)
Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Hummingbirds are on our china)
Mango Hummingbird
Painted Bunting (the colors of the bird matched the bird on our china)
In all, I spent about $100. Not cheap, but if I bought a pre-framed collection at a department store or art gallery it would have cost much more. Plus, I had a really difficult time finding art work of birds in general.

What's your favorite bird?

  1. It all looks lovely and polished. Do you usually keep your wedding album on your dining room table?

  2. I plan on putting my wedding album in our formal parlor once we get some furniture in there. I put it on the dining table for now because the kids kept touching it.

  5. I absolutely love the bird prints!! I'm not a birdwatcher or anything, but I have always been drawn to the delicacy of birds. And I love that kind of art, too. How did you get them to be a bit raised? Or at least it looks like they are. I also love that they correspond with your china.

  6. The prints aren't raised but "sunk in." You get this effect if you use a matted frame.

  7. Oh! I think my eyes are playing tricks on me! Well, thanks for answering. I recently matted a beautiful Mary Cassatt print my boyfriend got me from the National Gallery of Art. The frame and mat was from a thrift store! :) I'll have to send you a pic sometime.

  9. I love the painted bunting!! I think my favorite local bird is a red winged black bird...it might not be their look, but rather the way the dance among the fields at my parent's house.
