School Starts?

I blogged at the beginning of the summer about our dilemma of whether to start Christopher in kindergarten this year or next. Well, we debated it all summer. Talked to a lot of parents, friends, and family to see when they started school and what they recommended. It really opened my eyes to how many people delay the start of school and the variety of experiences people have.

We did finally reach a conclusion: he will start kindergarten at our local public school NEXT fall. Then I had to make the dreaded call to the school. Would they judge me for not starting him this year? Think I wasn't happy with the class he was assigned to? Be annoyed I waited so long to contact them about his placement? I was pleasantly surprised. They were not upset and not surprised. Knew I was calling about him even before I gave his name.

What are the plans for this year? I decided he will do a full year kindergarten at home too. Just to be clear: I'll be homeschooling him for kindergarten this year and he will be enrolled in kindergarten at the public school next year. He needs more formal instruction, but wasn't ready for the social part of public school. My family generously purchased this program for him. I'm really in love with the program so far and it is an accredited homeschooling program (something I think is very important if choosing to homeschool).

I plan to blog in full about the program and how he is doing after a few weeks. Thanks for all the helpful comments I received in my original post. I read and considered everyone that took the time to comment and I appreciate it!

  2. I've been really interested to see what you decided on about this, because I know we'll have the same debate in three years when Elliott turns 5. He's a summer baby, so he'll have just turned 5 when the school year starts. He'll go to pre-school next year, and if we need to, we'll just keep him there an extra year. It will also give us some flexibility in terms of my job and where that may or may not take us. Keep me updated on how you handle the delay year, because I'll probably be doing the same. :)

    1. My work played a role in not putting him in this year. It's only half day kindergarten and I can't leave work mid-day. He'd have to do after care, so if that's the case I'd rather him be a little older. Just a lot of shuffling for a little kid. I'll keep you updated!

  3. Glad you made the best decision for your family! Can I ask why you never put him in pre-k? I'm curious because we're starting to think about it for O.

    1. We didn't do preschool because of my work schedule. I couldn't be picking him up in the middle of the day and it was very costly even half day around here. Nothing against it, just didn't work for us.

  8. Sounds like you have a great plan! What a great program for your parents to share with their grandson. I would love to do supplemental teaching with my 4-year-old, but with a full-time job, I'm don't know how I'd fit it in. How do you plan on working in the homeschooling on top of your job?
